The word virus comes from the Latin word for toxin or poison. These menacing microorganisms infect humans, animals, plants and even bacteria. Various different viruses, including influenza, can cause the common cold and flu, while others can cause chronic, debilitating infections such as glandular fever and hepatitis. Some cancers and bacterial infections have also been associated with viral infection, for example Staphylococcal pneumonia is a common complication of influenza.
