Life After Antibiotics

Antibiotics are the most frequently prescribed medications in modern medicine. They are commonly prescribed by doctors to help resolve both minor and life threatening infections and there is no doubt that they have saved many lives since their discovery. Although antibiotics are useful when prescribed correctly, these anti-bacterial agents often kill not only the “bad” bacteria, but also our “good gut bacteria” that reside within us and keeps us healthy.

Due to the sweeping effect of antibiotics, those using them are often left with other types of infections such as Candida overgrowth (thrush). So, if you are currently undergoing or have recently undergone antibiotic therapy, here are three simple steps to help you re-establish your gut flora balance:

Step 1 – Eradicate

The eradication of the body’s own bacterial flora when taking antibiotics, establishes a convenient setting for opportunistic microbes including fungi, yeast and “bad” bacteria to invade the digestive tract. Therefore, the first step of re-establishing good health following antibiotic use should be taking Primadophilus ® Reuteri capsules or powder. This unique lactobacillus strain is a frontline fighter in the battle over crucial “breeding ground” in the digestive tract – it produces a distinctive antimicrobial substance called reuterin that helps kill off unwanted intruders.

Step 2 –Re-populate

Once the majority of foreign trespassers have been eliminated, it is time to re-populate with “good guys”. Once again Lactobacillus reuteri comes to the rescue – this incomparable strain contains a unique protein called AGGH that helps with the colonisation of other probiotic strains, making reuteri not just a good front line fighter, but a fantastic comrade too! In their Primadophilus® Reuteri product, Nature’s Way® have cleverly combined Lactobacillus reuteri with other friendly strains to help with the re-population of the gut. And, if there are enough good guys there is less space for any of the bad guys to settle in and make themselves at home!

Step 3 – Maintain

Peace and wellbeing has been re-established in the digestive tract. Congratulations! Now all you need is to keep it that way. To preserve this delicate balance you have strived so hard to achieve, take a high quality probiotic product daily that is suitable for your age group (see below) and - viola! Your gut and your immune system are now ready to enjoy prosperity and good health.
