Patented Formulation, Proven Absorption

Patented BioResponse DIM® is the only microencapsulated formulation of pure DIM. BioResponse DIM® is also the only DIM with proven absorption and benefits demonstrated in independently performed clinical studies. This patented technology is currently the only nutrient delivery method that assures predictable absorption and sustained delivery of diindolylmethane.

Absorption

The issue of absorption and bioavailability of DIM is a real issue as DIM is highly insoluble. Michael A. Zeligs, M.D., the founder and CEO of BioResponse Nutrients LLC, is the originator of the only bioavailable microencapsulated DIM. In 2000, BioResponse was awarded a patent for enhanced absorption of DIM, the only formulation that has received a US patent.

The microencapsulated formulation of DIM (BioResponse DIM®) contains a minimum of 25% of diindolylmethane. Our 150 mg capsules contain a minimum of 37.5 mg of diindolylmethane. Generic DIM, although it may contain a higher percentage of diindolylmethane, has been shown in studies to be very poorly absorbed.

Please refer to the graph above, which shows the absorption results of a comparison of absorbable BioResponse DIM® versus generic DIM. Note that this study compares 300 mg of BioResponse DIM®, providing 75mg diindolylmethane, to a generic DIM capsule, providing 100mg diindolylmethane.

The BioResponse DIM® showed substantially higher absorption values than the generic DIM, even though 25% less diindolylmethane was delivered with this dose of BioResponse DIM®. Microencapsulated BioResponse DIM® displays much higher absorption, while the generic DIM shows little absorption at all.

Recently, a number of knock-off manufacturers are attempting to position products offering a higher milligram amount of DIM in formulations without addressing the need for an absorption-enhancing microencapsulated formulation. Simply increasing the milligrams of DIM does not result in any predictable absorption. Our formulation is the only DIM formulation shown to shift the oestrogen metabolite ratio in clinical studies and provide other benefits in the suggested dose range.
All published clinical studies have only used the BioResponse patented DIM® formulation. BioResponse DIM® is the only DIM clinically tested in humans and is also the only DIM in clinical trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (Visit http://clinicaltrials.gov, keyword:”diindolylmethane”).

BioResponse DIM Offers Superior Safety, Stability, Dosage and Efficacy

Besides Diindolylmethane (DIM), its natural precursor, Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) is also present in cruciferous vegetables. I3C was the cruciferous indole first sold as a dietary supplement. Both DIM and I3C show real promise, yet studies have also uncovered sharp contrasts between them in one critical area -- consumer safety. Anyone advocating the benefits of I3C over DIM is ignoring the published scientific facts. A careful review of the research reveals serious questions concerning the safety of I3C.

Safety

The entire motivation for microencapsulated, absorbable DIM was based on testing which supported its safe and efficacious use. Human studies, often at five times the typical supplement dose of DIM, have shown good tolerability. Reports concerning I3C, however, provide a different story. Oral I3C in humans has been shown to have unwanted effects at only 2 times the normal dose with symptoms of dizziness, gastritis, and nervous system toxicity. In trout, both DIM and I3C have been shown to be oestrogenic at high dose and, like oestrogen, have been shown to promote liver tumors in carcinogen primed fish.

No toxicity or serious side effects have been reported with large, supplemental doses of Diindolylmethane in any non-trout study. In mammals, I3C has also been shown to be a tumor promoter in chronic use studies of thyroid, colon, and liver health. I3C increases the production of 4-hydroxyoestrogen (a "bad" oestrogen metabolite, associated with increased cancer risk and other negative health outcomes in humans). DIM leads to reduced activity of the enzyme called CYP1B1, which acts as a catalyst for 4-hydroxyoestrogen production. Therefore, unlike I3C, DIM does not promote tumors in mammals, reduces the production of 4-hydroxyoestrogen, and promotes safer oestrogen metabolism than that seen with I3C.

Stability

Microencapsulated DIM is very stable during storage and during digestion. It turns out that I3C is not active in your body until it is converted into DIM in our stomachs. DIM is formed as I3C combines with itself, in a process that occurs only if just the right amount of stomach acid is present. The problem is that everyone's digestion is a little different, so taking I3C results in unpredictable amounts of DIM. In addition, I3C is highly unstable and can transform into many other non-DIM substances. As a result, a mixture of byproducts leaves the stomach, some being absorbed, but most remaining in the intestinal tract. These I3C byproducts are not the wholesome, well-studied, cancer-preventive substances that some wish they were. Formaldehyde is released in the stomach with every use of I3C. I3C has a mixed reputation -- preventing cancer in some experiments but promoting cancer in others. Also, I3C can react with other substances in your diet, including vitamin C and many foods, making it unpredictable to use as a supplement.

Heat and moisture cause I3C to break down in supplement capsules and turn into a host of other substances of which DIM is only a small portion. Alternatively, microencapsulated Diindolylmethane (BioResponse DIM) has proven stable during prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity. This includes exposure of BioResponse DIM® to sustained temperatures of 104º F for a period of 6 months. Throughout this time periodic testing of the DIM content with a qualified testing procedure showed no loss in DIM potency. This testing is part of an ongoing Quality Assurance Program which documents the stability of BR-DIM in accelerated and real time aging conditions for at least two years.

Microencapsulated DIM (BioResponse DIM®) has proven very stable and requires no conversion in the stomach.

Dosage and Efficacy

Use of microencapsulated, absorbable BioResponse DIM has been shown effective in amounts close to that obtainable from our diet (0.3mg/kg/day of DIM). Because of I3C's instability and reactivity, I3C requires about 10-15 times more than this (4.5mg/kg/day). Higher doses of DIM are well-tolerated. Dr. H. Leon Bradlow, the original I3C researcher, has stated, "Because I3C gets converted in the stomach to intermediaries that have undesirable side effects, I would not recommend its use." Dr. Bradlow has since written numerous articles on the benefits of DIM. The demonstrated lack of side effects from high doses of absorbable DIM further underscores its safety when used at lower doses as a dietary supplement. BioResponse DIM® provides an efficacious approach to promoting healthy oestrogen metabolism.
