Resveratrol - the 21st century antioxidant

Radiance® Resveratrol

A revolutionary antioxidant that supports longevity and wellness. Radiance® Resveratrol provides a premium 100mg resveratrol in every capsule - naturally extracted from Japanese knotweed, nature's highest known plant source.

21st century technology has unlocked yet another of nature’s miracle nutrients. Resveratrol made headlines last November when scientists demonstrated that it kept overfed mice from gaining weight, increased their energy, stamina and agility and extended their life expectancy. The scientific and pharmaceutical community are abuzz with the potential this discovery has for new cardiovascular, cancer and weight management drugs.

But we don’t have to wait years for expensive synthesised drugs. Nature has provided resveratrol and other phyto-therapeutic compounds in red grapes, certain berries and the traditional Asian medicinal herb Polygonium cuspidatum, better known in the west as Japanese knotweed. In grapes, resveratrol is found mostly in the skin, hence the presence of resveratrol and other antioxidant polyphenols in red wine. It is thought that these compounds in red wine may account for the “French Paradox” – the fact that coronary heart disease mortality is lower in France than in other industrialised countries, despite their over consumption of saturated fat, alcohol, caffeine and cigarettes.

Whilst a glass a day of red wine is now considered healthful, excess alcohol consumption is not, so don’t try to “drink your way” to a high resveratrol intake. Some red wines have less than 0.25mg of resveratrol per litre, which would mean drinking over 150 litres before reaching close to a therapeutic dose.

Resveratrol is a phytoalexin, belonging to a family of naturally occurring polyphenolics. These compounds are produced by some higher plants in response to injury, infection or insect attack. Alexin means “to protect” and it would appear from early in vitro and animal studies that an increased resveratrol intake is associated with reduced cardiovascular disease, cancer and obesity whilst also increasing energy, performance and memory. Extensive research is underway to investigate the full extent of resveratrol’s health benefits for humans, including heart, brain, prostate and breast health, muscle and joint mobility, weight management and life extension.

Whilst we await research results to confirm or clarify the extent of therapeutic activity in humans, early research suggests that resveratrol has many different modes of action; hence its diverse range of benefits. Resveratrol effectively neutralises oxidative free radicals and inhibits oxidation of cholesterol into sticky low density lipoproteins (LDLs). This antioxidant activity can also help prevent DNA damage and encourage appropriate cell death. A good thing, as disordered DNA and cell function can lead to organ, memory and brain dysfunction, cancer and premature ageing. Additional cancer protection is suggested by resveratrol’s ability to inhibit certain cytochrome P450 liver enzymes whilst increasing phase II liver detoxification enzyme activity. Resveratrol also exhibits a range of antiinflammatory, anti-proliferation and nitric oxide stimulating properties that may help reduce tissue inflammation, stiffness and pain, retard the development of atherosclerosis and unhealthy cell growth and reduce the risk or incidence of cardiovascular disease including heart attacks. Resveratrol’s phytoestrogenic activity has been shown in vitro to gently stimulate oestrogen receptor activity in the absence of oestradiol, whilst inhibiting oestradiol activity in over stimulated oestrogen receptor cells.

Resveratrol and all the benefits it has to offer are now available to you under the premium quality Radiance® brand delivering 100mg resveratrol per capsule.  This makes Radiance Resveratrol one of the highest doses and most economical resveratrol product currently ont he New Zealand market.

Nature provides an amazing assortment of phytonutrients for health and wellbeing. Research, including studies on people living healthy lives beyond 100 years, suggests that unique natural nutrients such as resveratrol may be a key factor in helping us all, even those of us not genetically blessed with “long life genes”, to live a longer, healthier and fuller life.
