Facts on arthritis
Pain, swelling, inflammation and degeneration are words frequently associated with rheumatism and arthritis. There are more than 140 different types of arthritis that affect more than half a million men, women and children in New Zealand. The end result of arthritis is deterioration of joints and connective tissue.
Age is the single greatest risk factor for the development of arthritis, predominantly as a result of wear and tear, injury or altered condition of cartilage.

All moveable joints are enclosed in a joint cavity containing synovial fluid (a slippery “egg white-like” fluid that acts as a lubricant between articulating surfaces of joints). Within the joints, the articulating surfaces of bones are coated with cartilage, which is nourished with oxygen and nutrients contained in synovial fluid. Regeneration of this articular cartilage and other joint specific connective tissues after injury is often slow and unsatisfactory.

Connective tissue is the most abundant tissue in the body that connects, binds and supports bones and organs.
Cartilage, ligaments, tendons and synovial fluid are all forms of connective tissue. Connective tissue is made of components such as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), proteoglycans, collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, which together form a supportive meshwork between cells. GAGs and proteoglycans form a hydrated gel that resists compressive forces. Collagen and elastin form fibrous tissue that resists stretching forces. Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains moisture, functioning as a lubricant. Ageing, smoking and nutritional deficiencies (particularly magnesium and zinc) cause depletion of hyaluronic acid.
